Application Architect

My client is a NY-based publisher of a daily newswire. By providing trusted and concise around-the-clock news coverage of major developments, their publication has fast become a must-have for the subscribers.

My client is looking for an Application Architect with an impeccable track record and leadership experience. They want someone who is not only a great developer, but a strategic, entrepreneurial thinker to build their application development team. They are a small company just starting to take off, and they need a sharp technologist with vision and business acumen to develop their Internet and application strategy for the future.

This role will oversee the whole software development life cycle for their publishing platform (content management system in .NET backed by SQL server) and website and subscription system (Ruby on Rails application backed by MySQL databases) as well as build a team to execute the projects which include user generated content, structured data and real-time information delivery.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Recommending, designing and developing optimal technical results based on business requirements and analysis

Setting short and long term development goals

Working with product manager and business owners on planning and preparing for new projects

Examining, evaluating and assessing the impact of technology trends in the market

Building and managing development team

Mentoring and improving the skill sets of the development team

Balancing multiple priorities across software development projects

Requirements for position:

BA/BS degree or higher required

At least 4-6 years of application development experience with OOAD and a variety of technologies, such as: Ruby on Rails, Java or .Net

At least 2 years as a application architect, solution architect or development lead utilizing Agile and Test Driven Development methodologies

Direct management experience a must

At least 1+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails a plus but not required

Experience developing innovative Web-based software (Web 2.0 a plus)

Knowledge of RIAs such as Ajax and Flex

Experience with User Experience Design a plus

Experience in a software or software-as-a-service start-up a plus

Experience with semantic web technologies, ontologisms, and ETL a plus

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

Must be able to write user, functional and system requirements
