Director of Technology with Heavy Interactive Experience Needed in NYC

The Director of Technology will be responsible for the success of all technology engagements  and for building a world-class technology team. The Director of Technology will also be challenged with implementing processes that deliver superior client service at all levels and working with other discipline group directors to facilitate cross-discipline communication and collaboration. This candidate will have extensive and wide experience in the technology space with much of this experience focused on large-scale digital application development and design. This successful candidate will have exceptional leadership and communication abilities as well as an appreciation for great design. The Director of Technology will report to the Partners.


  • Responsible for overall leadership of the Technology group as well as direct management of all disciplines outside of software development but part of the Technology group such as Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Technology Project Management, Network Engineering etc.
  • Accountable for overall department P&L and ensuring engagements are scoped, executed and delivered according to planned terms
  • Oversee scope development, resource allocation, schedule and cost estimation/planning for all technology projects and phases involving technology
  • Work with project teams in a hands-on capacity to regularly identify risks and make recommendations on how to resolve any potential or pending issues (technology, communication, process related etc.) as they arise
  • Plan and manage department staffing and resource allocation across all technology projects – understand and document the individual skill-sets and levels within the Department and plan hiring and staffing accordingly
  • Communicate short and long-term staffing plans to resource management and recruiting groups on a regular basis
  • Provide oversight and direction through requirements gathering, technical feasibility/analysis phases and ensure that all planning work is completed correctly and accurately
  • Develop detailed job descriptions and responsibilities for all technology roles and clearly communicate expectations to the individuals in those roles
  • Ensure  regular code reviews occur during the project lifecycle and conduct post mortems meetings with technology team members as well as those from other disciplines
  • Propose recommendations to  senior management on department organizational structure as required and provide supporting reasoning
  • Mentor and conduct performance evaluations for all direct reports, provide coaching and mentorship to managers with their own direct reports
  • Participate in new business opportunities and the review and development of proposals and scopes.
  • Lead the development of new contractual agreements such as support level agreements and clearly document terms and conditions
  • Work with technology discipline managers to facilitate learning and professional development. Identify career growth paths for all members of the Technology Department
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with other department leaders and business teams 



  • 15-20+ years developing and leading large-scale technology engagements involving custom development and complex integration using both open source and enterprise level technologies
  • Minimum 7+ years managing a team of technologists in an interactive agency environment
  • Proven ability as a technology leader in a management role responsible for technology teams of 50+ people
  • Proven successes implementing new processes and best practice approaches in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Expert level knowledge of a wide-array of programming languages such as .NET, Java and PHP, Perl, SQL, Flash/Flex, Ruby-on-Rails, etc. and the ability to propose alternative solutions and cost-benefit analysis based on these technologies
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with object-oriented design concepts, various frameworks, data storage implementations and enterprise design patterns
  • Extensive hands-on experience working with enterprise level CMS systems, ecommerce platforms and enterprise search solutions
  • Advanced knowledge of web 2.0 technologies including social network and blog platforms, widget development, mobile and emerging digital interfaces
  • Strong experience with development methodologies from traditional waterfall to agile and scrum approaches
  • Current understanding of market trends and keen interest in following emerging technologies and trends
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies and approaches
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills and experience presenting to c-level client stakeholders
  • Active in the interactive community and experience speaking at conferences and on various industry panels preferred
  • Advanced level technical degree preferred
